Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. She founded Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing depictions of women's roles in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency, a web-based resource for education that examines women's role in the narratives of pop culture was the result of her research. She also serves as the director of operations. In her efforts to dispel the myths associated with women in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to the targeted harassment of women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet environment. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Alongside being an acclaimed public speaker, she has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identities and feminisms from at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the university. It was a girl determined to make a series of web videos that would examine gender roles in games. In the end, she ended up being the victim of online harassment. The attack wasn't enough to stop her. Instead, it strengthened her commitment as a feminist and media critique. Her notable contributions to the field of feminist were recognized by a variety of awards.
